The Trump White House has signaled its intent to begin rewriting regulations for the National Environmental Policy Act. Although each federal agency has its own NEPA regulations, CEQ’s regulations serve as broad guidelines for the entire government.
CEQ submitted an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking to the Federal Register on Friday, June 15, that reflects the direction of this White House. NEPA has been criticized in recent years for delaying significant infrastructure projects, such as highways, bridges, schools, tunnels, and utility rights-of-way, and thus streamlining its procedures remains a high priority for the Administration.
The notice lays out the 20 questions dealing with the NEPA process broadly, NEPA definitions and scope of review, and other general provisions. Public comments are due in 30 days.
